Literature Text

Walking through a field of grass that was knee high,
The little girl beside me finally became too eager
To reach the sight just ahead of us to follow at my slow pace.

She hurried ahead into the darkness, and before long
She was in the midst of a million tiny lights that
Flickered and pulsed as they drifted from place to place.

Reaching out, she snatched one of the lights in mid-flight.
She peered into her cupped hands and a look of
Wonderment covered her face when she saw what she had caught.

\"A lightning bug!\" she exclaimed as she ran back to me,
Treasure in hand. She had never seen them before.
\"It\'s so tiny... How did it swallow the lightning?\"
She looked up and asked me. I smiled and said:
\"I don\'t know sweetheart, but it goes to show that
You can do great things if you try hard enough,
Even if you\'re small.\"

She opened her hands and allowed the little bug
To fly away into the night. We stayed there and
Watched them dance until she fell asleep in my lap.
I kissed her forehead. \"Good night, my little lightning bug.\"

This poem/short story is near and dear to my heart. The pure and innocent nature of a child never ceases to amaze me, and some of the things they come up with are astounding. Imagine seeing the world through eyes that haven't been blurred by scenes of horror and a heart that isn't tainted by pain or hate. Even though they're so young, they make an impact on our lives that will stay with us forever, and the same is true for our interactions with them.

That's beautiful. My fond memories of my childhood are triggered by thoughts of lightning bugs. Although I have little choice while in the military, I want to settle somewhere where the little wonders are so my kids can have similar fond memories of them.
