FFC - Silver + Red Skin by silverkitsune FFC - Silver + Red Skin by silverkitsune
(FoxFire Creations - Silver & Red Skin)

This is a preview of what I've been working on recently. My new personal/portfolio website, in it's Silver & Red (main) skin. Please full-view for maximum detail (if DA will cooperate with me...)

This is the front page (as though that's not obvious =P), the first thing you'll see when you visit the website. I'm considering making a splash page that way visitors can pick the skin they want to use before entering... But I'm undecided.

I will also have a HTML only version for folks with slow Internet connections, or those who just don't care about the graphical glitz.

The website will serve first and foremost as a portfolio of sorts... Just a way to display my design, writing, and other miscellaneous creations that are worthy to be shown as some of my best work. There will be a journal/bio section where folks can learn a bit more about me and see what I'm up to (the personal side of the portfolio/personal website). Plus some useful articles, links, and maybe even some programs and FoxFire Creations wallpaper/application skins (if I can ever find time to make any of that )

Of course, as was mentioned before, there will be other skins. I have 3 total planned... The one you see, a black & blue version (for those who like something a little darker that wont strain their sensitive eyes :)), and the HTML only version for fast browsing.

I'd like some feedback on the overall look/design. Let me know what you like/don't like about it, things that could use some modifications, or anything I might have left out.

Thanks for checking it out. :D

it's sexy an' all, but what are you doing about the background when the content extends beyond the demensions you have there? I mean, you can't tile it, so i guess its kinda limited to a frames site or a fade to white or something further down...

I do really like the layout though. It's quite different from most of the other stuff out there.

Ah, someone noticed the fact that with such a complex background that I wont be able to tile. Very good perception there.

Layouts that are image heavy, and use one that isn't easy to repeat in the background can prove to be a challenge... As you said, one way of doing this would be to have it in frames, however, that leaves the problem of a scrollbar pushing everything out of whack if the framed page needs to scroll...

I'd never do it for a site that wasn't under strict control by either myself or someone who knew what they were getting in to... But, my soultution is actually to go with a standard, frameless design. In general, my content will not be exceedingly long: it will fit well in a text box the same size as the one you see.

The exceptions are my stories, which can run quite a bit longer than this page length. In those cases, in the skins that have a background which can't be tiled, my option is to create a sub-skin page designed to hold the longer bits of text.

In practice, I'm going to try and keep the "click count" down... Meaning, I don't want to overwhelm my visitors by making them click 10 different things to get somewhere useful... But I want to maintain the integrity of my current design if at all possible. I know some folks aren't too keen about things opening in new windows... But, since it's something they want to read and there wont be advertizements anywhere else on the site, I'm thinking it wont be an insurmountable issue.

If you have any other ideas, by all means, mention them. :D

yeah, i always do writing or anything like that in new windows. then you don't have to do anything especially fancy with the layout of the new window. Since they opened it to read the work, there's really no need for impressive backgrounds. Honestly, I think that they kind of distract from the writing.

opening new windows also cuts down substantially on complexity. there's no need for "back to writing" buttons or the use of sub navigations.

also, i'd suggest that if you're going to create sub-skins, i'd do it for all the skins, not just the ones that can't be tiled. consistency is vastly underrated.

Wooo, looks neat - Nothing standardish regarding the look and also small in loading size. I would recommend a dynamic PHP Skin chooser like it is used on [link] for example.

I just have one hint that would improve your page IMO: The readability of the text. That font looks kinda "blurred" - Its still readable but it could cause severe trouble when reading bigger amounts of text.

Thank you very much for the idea/tip, I really appriciate it. I was wondering how the font would turn out, and you're very right: At the size it's set, the font face does look kind of blurred. I'll probably set the standard reading text (the black text) to something standard, or easy to see at a small size, so I don't give my visitors a headache.

Thanks again, and here's the cookie I promised anyone who commented. :cookie: :D

I just dig for "Verdana", font size 2 - Thats the best compromise of readability and "designish-looking" text. ^^

That looks really nice. That is a cool idea, being able to click on an alternatively skinned site.

When can we actually go to the site and check it out?

With any luck... Sometime in the next two weeks. After I get some feedback on the basic design, to make sure everything's up to par, I can make the black/blue skin and HTML versions fairly quick. After that, it's just a matter of coding (Yay! one of my favorite parts!) everything together and uploading it to my webspace.

I might actually have it done before then, depending on whether or not I can arrange to have a few extra hours to work on it, and how soon I'm satisfied that anyone who comments on the design has picked out anything I might need to change.
